Mayor Walsh Visits City Hall Plaza Construction Site In Boston

Mayor Walsh and Chief of Operations, Pat Brophy, visited the City Hall Plaza construction site in March 2021, accompanied by representatives from the Shawmut Construction team.

Safety first! Joined by members of the Shawmut Construction team, Mayor Walsh discussed ways in which team members have prioritized safety while on site. Throughout the pandemic, Shawmut has deployed enhanced safety protocols to mitigate the risk of infectious disease spread across all job sites — rolling out new procedures, jobsite innovations, and an exhaustive COVID-19 risk assessment and response plan nationwide. These protocols are implemented at the Boston City Hall Plaza site and include "Shawmut Vitals" — a custom-built technology platform which allows team members to self-certify daily health screenings by scanning a job-specific QR code and completing a survey.

Members of the project team stand in what will soon be a fully accessible pathway which will connect Congress Street to Cambridge Street, allowing Bostonians of all abilities to enjoy the plaza.

City’s Chief of Operations, Pat Brophy, discusses some of the major improvements that will transform this civic space. Some highlights of this project include a 12,000-square-foot playscape for children and families, flexible and accommodating event space, increased permeable surfaces that will soak up stormwater, and an enhanced tree canopy.
