North End Celebrates Columbus Day

Friends of Christopher Columbus Park offered a parade, laying of the wreath at the statue of Columbus and family events.

It was perfect weather to celebrate Columbus Day.

The sun was blazing and the air crisp as families gathered inside Christopher Columbus Park on Monday to recognize the explorer's discovery.

Peter O'Malley The Magician gathered a large group of children who paraded around the park. After the rousing drumming, the participants joined their parents in from of the statue.

"This is the best Columbus Day we're had," said Joanne Hayes-Rines, president of the Friends of Christopher Columbus Park. "We've been (holding the event) for three years."

She introduced State Rep. Aaron Michlewitz who placed the ceremonial wreath by the statue of Columbus.

"He's a native of the North End so I think we can call Aaron an honorary Italian," Joanne said of Aaron.

"I want to thank everyone for coming and especially the children for providing such a wonderful parade," Aaron said.

Immediately following, the children ran down to a circle in the park where Jenny The Juggler mesmorized them with her outstanding program.
