North End Dentist Treats Disability, Not Just Problem

Dr. Leslie P. Racowsky works with patients to solve their dental conditions.

Tucked away in a historic building at 11 Commercial Wharf, Dr. Leslie P. Racowsky has his practice as a general dentist.

He explained the term.

“What that means is that you are trained to practice all aspects of dentistry to the limit of your abilities,” Dr. Racowsky said.

He decided to become a dentist years ago.

“I was very interested in science and helping people,” Dr. Racowsky said.

He set up his practice in 1975 after serving in Vietnam on an aircraft carrier called the USS Constellation.

Dr. Racowsky grew up in southern California and went to college there.

“I then went to dental school in St. Louis and graduated from Washington University School of Dental Medicine,” he said. “Now, I live in Boston.”

The practice

Dr. Racowsky provides comprehensive dental care.

“The patient and I treat the disability and now just the problem,” he said.

The example Dr. Racowsky gave to illustrate his point was a root canal.

“Perhaps it’s because of the bite,” he said. “In that case, we treat the bite as well as the root canal.”

Inside his office, Dr. Racowsky has several treatment rooms, a reception area, his own lab and a bathroom for patients.

His hours are by appointment Monday through Friday.

The building

“Commercial Wharf was built in 1830 during Andrew Jackson’s presidency,” Dr. Racowsky said. “In 1886, it was cut in half to make right-of-way for the North Station-South Station railway.”

Dr. Racowsky set up the practice in the North End for several reasons.

“I like the waterfront and urban renewal was making this a new community in 1975,” he said.
