Woman Hit In The Head By Falling Metal In North End

NORTH END, MA —A woman in her 30s was hit by a piece of metal as she walked through the North End Thursday morning, according to police, leaving her with life threatening injuries.

"My heart goes out to the woman involved in the terrible event this morning in the North End, and I pray she will be okay. There is currently a full investigation underway by city and federal agencies to get to the bottom of what happened," tweeted Mayor Marty Walsh.

Boston police said someone called 911 just before 8:30 a.m. about a woman who had been hit in the head with a piece of metal near 84 Atlantic Ave. The Boston Globe reported witnesses said there was a lot of blood. There's a crane next to the building and metal barriers along the roof of the building, one was reportedly on the ground below.

Inspectional Services Commissioner Dion Irish told reporters that the contractor working at the location is cooperating with police, and the department is looking into permits and work practices. Irish also told reporters the contractor had a permit for roofing work at the site where the debris fell.

Boston Fire Department, the attorneys general office and OSHA are also investigating, according to officials.
