N. R. Rotary to hold Addiction Prevention speaker series
N R Rotary is now Metro North Addiction Prevention Rotary

ROTARY TO HOST
Addiction Prevention Series
North Reading Rotary has been an integral part of the community since its inception in 1955. All along, in addition to North Reading Rotary’s local projects, the Rotarians have been involved in Regional and worldwide causes. As the world has changed, so has Rotary International. Keeping pace with the world, R.I. has offered clubs an opportunity to focus on specific areas. As you may or may not know, at the end of last year the NR Rotary became “a cause driven club focusing on Addiction Prevention”, and has changed its name to Metro North Addiction Prevention Rotary Club, denoting that addiction is not just a problem locally, so its programs will be available to other communities as well. .
Metro North Addiction Prevention Rotary Club President Dave O’Neil has announced that plans are underway for March 18 from 6 to 8pm at North Reading’s Flint Memorial Library for the first of three spring sessions that will be offered. The session will be held in the Library’s Community Room and will be facilitated by Barbara MacIntyre, a nurse who has worked for 23 years of her 46-year career as a nurse. She holds a Master’s Degree in nursing with a major in Nurse Management and Patient Education.

Addiction is a complex disease, often chronic in nature, which affects the functioning of the brain and body. It also causes serious damage to families, relationships, schools, workplaces and neighborhoods. The most commonly discussed types of addiction are alcohol and narcotics, but addiction spreads to Gambling, sex, tobacco, and even sex.
Although there is not yet a cure for addiction, there are effective treatments and ways to manage it. This can include helping people reduce and eliminate their use of addictive substances so they can lead healthy lives. Effective clinical treatments for addiction include a range of U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved medications and psychosocial therapies (often called therapy) delivered by qualified health professionals.
