QUINCY, MA — While you will no longer be able to get a single-use plastic bag in Quincy starting on Sunday, you may be able to get a reusable one from Stop & Shop if you get to the store early enough. Stop & Shop is giving away 300 reusable bags to customers at each of its two locations Sunday on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The giveaways will be at both the company's Southern Artery and Newport Avenue locations.

"Stop & Shop wants to help customers make the transition away from plastic — and encourages all customers to utilize reusable bags as it is the most sustainable choice for the environment," the company said in a release, adding that the transition to reusable bags has helped Stop & Shop remove more than 1 billion plastic bags from use in recent years.

The Quincy City Council voted in December to join 120 other communities in the state in banning single-use plastic bags. The ban, with limited exceptions, will go into effect city-wide on March 1. The first violation of the ban will receive a written warning and two-week period to correct the violation, with a $50 fine for the second violation and $100 fine for additional violations.
