State Trooper Found Not Guilty Of Assault In Case From 2018
The former Quincy resident and state trooper was ruled not guilty of assault in a bar altercation which took place in Dorchester in 2018.
QUINCY, MA- Former Quincy resident and state trooper, Matthew Hickey, 32, was found not guilty of committing assault on a woman in an altercation in 2018 which Hickey strangled her and left her with a broken tibia in her leg. The altercation took place in Dorchester and was escalated from a from an argument over a spilled drink.
Hickey plead not guilty to the assault and battery with a dangerous weapon charges he faced. Hickey served in Afghanistan for five years with the marine corps, and had been with the Massachusetts State Police for three years before the incident occurred. Hickey was suspended without pay after the incident.
According to the victim, she and her friend exited the bar after an altercation over a spilled drink occurred. Then, Hickey and his girlfriend reportedly followed the two women down the street, drop kicked one of their phones and claimed Hickey said, "you will not be needing this anymore,". Hickey then reportedly choked the victim and kicked her in the leg, breaking her tibia. Hickey then called 911 to report that one of the women he followed spilled a drink on his girlfriend.

Rachael Rollins, Suffolk County District Attorney, says that the victim, "suffered a broken leg during the interaction with Trooper Hickey that required surgery to implant a metal rod and screws in her leg,".
Hickey's lawyer, Kevin Mullen, said, "It was the right verdict," following the court decision to rule Hickey not guilty. Mullen believed after accumulating the additional evidence from surveillance footage and witnesses that it helped his case to prove Hickey is innocent. Attorney Rollins thanked the prosecution staff and Boston Police Detectives who worked on the case and was "disappointed in the outcome" of the trial.

Following Hickey's arraignment in December 2018, he was indicted in May of 2019. Hickey still remains suspended by the Massachusetts State Police without pay.
