Stop & Shop Traffic Was Down 75 Percent During Strike: Data
Visits by "loyal" Stop & Shop customers dropped 75 percent after workers went on strike, according to a new survey.

QUINCY, MA — It's been over a week since tens of thousands of Stop & Shop workers across Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut went on strike. The strike started on April 11 after Stop & Shop and the unions representing its workers in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire failed to reach agreements on new contracts, with disputes over time-and-a-half pay, and healthcare and retirement benefits being among the biggest disagreements.
According to a Boston technology company, the strike is having a significant impact on foot traffic at the stores that remained open. Skyhook has been using mobile location to track how the strike has affected the number of customers shopping at the store.
According to the company's data, customer traffic plummeted in the first few days of the strike compared to what it was the previous weekend. Between April 12 and 14, the number of loyal stop and shop customer, defined in the report as someone who visits Stop & Shop once a week, dropped 75 percent compared to the weekend prior.

The report said most customers decided to take their business elsewhere. Hannaford saw a 300 percent increase in foot traffic from loyal Stop & Shop customers, while Market Basket had a 115 percent increase. The data also showed a 75 percent increase for Trader Joe's and Shaw's and 50 percent for Star Market.
Skyhook said the data analysis was based on anonymous cellphone data from a group of loyal customers, which the report defined as someone who visits Stop & Shop at least once a week. Check out the full Skyhook report here.
