Support Strong As Quincy Hockey Player Improves From Scary Injury

QUINCY, MA — The mother of a North Quincy hockey player who lost feeling in his arms and legs following a check in a game against Scituate said senior Connor Kulig is continuing to show significant signs of improvement. Dawn MacLeod-Kulig posted on social media late Tuesday that the prognosis for Kulig's recovery have brightened in the week since he sustained the injury.

"The surgeon just told me he went from hopes of Connor being able to push a wheelchair to now standing and taking steps," she posted. "Miracle. Keep praying, please. They are being answered."

North Quincy athletic director J.J. Niamkey told Patch the school and family of Connor Kulig were thankful for the outpouring of support and well-wishes after the senior suffered what was described as a "scary and unfortunate" injury during North Quincy's game against Scituate
on Jan. 8 at Hockomock Arena in Pembroke. Niamkey said Kulig was "doing better day-by-day" as he recovered from the injury.

"It's been very overwhelming," he told Patch. "Not only from teams in our league, but from throughout the high school hockey community. It's always great to see people react like that when something like this happens."

Teams have posted their support on social media using the hashtag #StayStrongConnor, while Braintree High is holding a fundraiser for Kulig during Wednesday night's game against Natick.
