Learn the Art of Frame Drumming

Frame Drums: One of the Most Ancient Types of Hand Drums Played Around the World

Creative Arts fall classes are starting soon in Reading Center!! This semester, a new class is being offered for the first time: "Introduction to Frame Drumming for Adults and Interested Teens".

This 6 week class is a rare offering on the north shore of Boston, and a perennial favorite among folk music fans and musicians. Frame drums are one of the most ancient types of hand drums still found around the world and students of all levels are welcome. This is a class for beginners as well as for those who want to review and brush up on skills. It includes basic playing strokes, stroke combinations, and more complex patterns along with the joy of drumming as a group. Drums will be available for use during class and to purchase ($20-$55 depending on size) or students can bring their own.
The teacher, Dee Clark, earned a Master of Fine Arts in Intermedia from the University of Maine with an interdisciplinary minor in Music, Psychology, and Peace studies. She has been studying hand drumming—West African and frame drums—with members of Inanna, Sisters in Rhythm since 2004 and worked with them to create a songbook, Rhythmic Migrations, which was published in 2016. Dee teaches piano, percussion and voice at Creative Arts.
