Ahead Of Cold Snap, Salem Looks To Protect Homeless

With record cold in the forecast, officials are asking residents to call Salem police if they see anyone who needs a wellness check.

SALEM, MA — Forecasters are calling for temperatures in the 20s and wind chills as low as negative 5 degrees in some areas as a cold front moves through the region Tuesday and Wednesday. And that has officials in Salem working to make sure the city's homeless population is cared for.

Residents can help by calling the Salem police non-emergency number at 978-744-1212 or by emailing Salem HOPE at hope@salem.com. In a Facebook post Tuesday, Ward 3 City Councilor Lisa Peterson said police would conduct wellness checks and invite homeless people to overflow space at an area shelter.
