Bakers Island Light Station Oil House Restoration This Summer

SALEM, MA — The Essex National Heritage Commission will use a state matching grant to do some work at Bakers Island this summer.

Essex Heritage said on Tuesday it was awarded a $3,150 matching grant from Preservation Massachusetts, in partnership with the 1772 Foundation, to make the repairs to the 1895 Oil House at the Bakers Island Light Station.

Work is scheduled for this summer.

"We are honored to be chosen as a recipient of this competitive grant from The 1772 Foundation," said Annie C. Harris, Essex Heritage CEO. "These matching funds will help us rebuild the Oil House roof this summer.

"The maintenance and restoration of the historic structures at the Bakers Island Light Station are ongoing challenges on the island due to the harsh marine environment."

Essex Heritage recently announced a series of other grants on the North Shore, including one for the arch at Salem Common, the Salem Coastwatch outdoor classroom project and a Marblehead Museum art project to honor diversity in the town.
