Civil Rights Activist Angela Davis Caps Salem State's MLK Events

Davis will deliver the keynote address to conclude a week that includes a virtual march and vigil, and inauguration watch party.

SALEM, MA — A week of virtual events to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. and the inauguration of Kamala Harris as the first Black, South Asian and woman vice president of the United States at Salem State University will conclude with a keynote address from civil rights activist Angela Davis next Friday.

All events are open to the general public and the media.

An Inauguration Day watch event will take place Wednesday at 11:30 a.m.

A virtual freedom march and candlelight vigil will take place Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

A convocation and keynote address from Davis will be 1 p.m. on Jan. 22.

Davis is the author of 10 books and has lectured throughout the United States as well as in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and South America. In recent years, her work has centered around the themes of social problems associated with incarceration and criminalization of those communities that are most affected by poverty and racial discrimination.

Her recent books include "Abolition Democracy and Are Prisons Obsolete?" about the abolition of the prison industrial complex, a new edition of "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass" and a collection of essays entitled "The Meaning of Freedom."

Her most recent book of essays "Freedom Is a Constant Struggle: Ferguson, Palestine, and the
Foundations of a Movement" was published in Feb. 2016.
