David E. McCarthy, Sr., 77, Graduate of Salem High School

David was born in Salem and graduated from Salem High School in 1956.

Danvers – David E. McCarthy, Sr., age 77, husband of the late Marilyn (Deslongchamps) McCarthy, died Tuesday June 15, 2016 at the Lahey Medical Center in Burlington. Born in Salem, he graduated from Salem High School in 1956. He entered the United States Navy in 1958 and served his Country during the Vietnam War. 

Upon his discharge from the military, he returned to work at Massachusetts Electric, were he had met his wife. They married in 1961. He was with Massachusetts Electric for his entire career. He worked as a draftsman and attended night classes at Northeastern University and earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1975. He was an electrical engineer for the company for many years working at the North Andover location until his retirement in September of 1998. During his retirement he worked as a contractor for National Grid.

Starting in the 1970’s, he was a member of the Seabees Cold Weather Battalion of Brunswick, Maine for over 20 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Thomas Powers Council of Danvers where he was a past Grand Knight and a fourth degree Knight. He was a very active member of St. Agnes Church in Middleton participating in many activities of the church. He enjoyed being a Eucharist Minister for the Church and also a member of the Marion Rosary Group out of Danvers. 

He had a love for life. He was a very loving grandfather and was very proud of his grandchildren participating in many of their activities. He had a great passion for horse racing and enjoyed traveling the country to different tracks. He most especially enjoyed his yearly trip to Saratoga with his horse racing buddies and the Triple Crown. He was a proud Boston sports fan and an avid golfer and member of the Wenham Country Club. Traveling was a big part of his life and also wintered in West Palm Beach, Florida for many years.

Surviving him are his four children, David McCarthy, Jr and his wife Kathy of Augusta, ME, Michael McCarthy and his wife Diane of Woodstock, MD, Lisa Walke and her husband Bernie of Middleton, Linda McCarthy of Danvers, two sisters, Jean McCarthy of Salem, Anne Keaveney and her husband David of Dennis, MA, seven grandchildren, Colleen Gideon and her husband Kevin, Michael McCarthy and his wife Tara, Molly Wilson, Mary Kate and Conor McCarthy, Meaghan and Tyler Walke, and two great grandchildren, Aiden and Andrew Paul.

Mr. McCarthy’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Agnes Church, 22 Boston St., Middleton on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Monday June 20, 2016 at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (corner of North St.) Salem from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Burial will be held privately.
