Man Admits to Shoplifting after Going to Church

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log:

Saturday, April 20

At 1:15 a.m. an officer observed a man sleeping in the ATM at Century Bank on Central Street. The officer checked the man for warrants and then advised him to stay out of the ATM unless conducting business.

At 2:01 a.m. a caller reported a motor vehicle accident on Canal Street in which one of the operators involved fled the scene. Officers located the operator at his home and noticed signs of intoxication from liquor. Police arrested Jose Edwin Alcantara, 19, of 25 Hazel St., and charged him with operating under the influence of liquor, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and leaving the scene after property damage. 

At 3:52 a.m. a caller reported hearing a car crash on Phillips Street and witnessed the operator behind the motor vehicle. The caller then saw the operator attempt to flee and was able to stop him. Police arrested George Steven Jach, 52, of 111 Foster St., Peabody, and charged him with operating under the influence of liquor, second offense.

At 9:24 a.m. an officer stopped Jack A. Meyers, 24, of 12 Pope St. Upon further investigation the officer placed Meyers under arrest. Meyers was charged with an expired inspection sticker, operating a motor vehicle after a license suspension. 

At 5:09 p.m. shoplifting was reported on Congress Street. The owner of a shop reported that a man stole two candy bars and later came back and admitted it. The man reported that, after going to church, he decided to come back and pay for the candy bars. He was served with a no trespass order.
