SALEM, Mass. – Patients have started to notice a baby boom at North Shore Medical Center (NSMC). Six nurses, one obstetrician and one unit secretary, who all work together in the NSMC Birthplace are expecting. The first addition to the North Shore family is due at the end of this month. The youngest of the bunch is due in February.

Seven of the future moms will give birth where they work in the NSMC Birthplace. “When I found out I was pregnant, I immediately knew I was going to deliver here,” said Amy Sclafani. “The Birthplace is like my home. I wouldn’t have my baby anywhere else.” The moms-to-be include: Caila Kelley, R.N.; Rosanna Aswad, R.N.; Amy Sclafani R.N.; Mindy Languirand R.N.; Chasity Sanchez, unit secretary; Leo McEnelly, R.N.; Amelia Athanasopoulos, R.N.; and Rosa (Lorie) Diaz, M.D. They are part of the Birthplace’s care team of board-certified obstetricians, anesthesiologists, experienced nurses, certified nurse midwives, neonatologists and other staff who team up to provide complete family-focused care. As patients of the NSMC Birthplace, each will have a private room during her hospital stay.

The nurses are in good hands. While they’re all in different stages of their pregnancies, each has experienced the same outpouring of support, kindness and care from their colleagues. As their roles have evolved from caregiver to patient, they’re appreciative of the professionalism and close communication with their own care teams. “It’s been amazing to go through my pregnancy with my coworkers who are like my family,” said Caila Kelley, R.N. “We come to work, support each other and share our milestones. It’s just a great place to be.” For more information, visit: nsmc.partners.org/birthplace.

The NSMC family is growing in other ways as well. The multi-site health system, a member of Partners HealthCare, recently opened an expanded Emergency Department and the Epstein Center for Behavioral Health at NSMC Salem Hospital and will open a new Urgent Care Facility in Lynn this November.
