SALEM, MA — Outdoor dining is returning to Salem next month.

More than three dozen restaurants have applied for approval to set up outdoor dining areas in the city, whether it's in parking lots, the sidewalk or other private and public spaces.

"Last spring, at the outset of the pandemic, our restaurants and community partners pivoted quickly to be able to set up safer outdoor dining areas to allow for more space between customers and greater air circulation," Mayor Kim Driscoll said in a statement. “What we discovered was that these activations not only made our community safer, they also made our public spaces more enjoyable overall."
