Salem Winter Storm: Schools Get Out Early, Testing Canceled

Based on forecasts of 3 to 6 inches of snow on the North Shore, Salem is putting parking off-limits and having an early release school day.

SALEM, MA — Salem Public Schools called for an early release day on Tuesday with all after-school activities canceled ahead of a storm that could bring 3 to 6 inches of snow to the North Shore.

A snow emergency parking ban was called to begin at 2 p.m. through most of the city and 4 p.m. downtown.

Museum Place Garage and South Harbor Garage snow rates will go into effect Tuesday at 11 a.m. Cars parked in the garages prior to 11 a.m. will be charged normal rates.

The evening "Stop the Spread" drive-thru coronavirus testing at Salem High School was also canceled. The walk-in site at Old Town Hall remained open during the day.

The Salem Public Library was to close at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

Snowfall was expected to begin between 8 a.m.-10 a.m. in central Massachusetts and 10 a.m.-noon in eastern Massachusetts. It's expected to continue for about 12 hours, with the heaviest of it coming between 2 p.m.-7 p.m.

North and west of Boston are under a winter storm warning and expected to get the worst of it. Places like Worcester, Amherst, Lawrence and Newburyport are looking at 6-8 inches.
