Salem May Add Traffic Cameras To School Zones

The systems could automatically ticket or issue warnings to drivers who violate traffic laws in school zones in Salem.

SALEM, MA — Salem City Council will consider a proposal to install up to two traffic camera systems in each of the city's school zones. The proposed legislation from Mayor Kim Driscoll would let the city automatically fine car owners $25 per violation if the systems catch a driver violating a traffic law. Salem could also use the system to send warnings to car owners, according to the legislation.

The system would be live from 5 a.m. to midnight, even when school is not in session. Citations issued by the system would not affect a driver's record. The system would be overseen by the Salem police department, and the legislation would allow the department to "hire...or contract" for the implementation and administration of the system.

If approved by council, Salem would need to petition the state for the change to its home rule charter. The complete proposal is included in the packet for the city council meeting scheduled for Thursday.
