Salem School Board Sees 'No Good Choices' For School Reopening

The school committee began discussing three plans for the reopening of schools this fall.

SALEM, MA — The Salem School committee will meet Aug. 4 and 6 to hear recommendations and make a decision on how to reopen schools this fall: in person, fully-remote or a hybrid model that combines in-person and remote learning.

The school committee held a working meeting to begin discussing the plans and go through survey feedback from parents Wednesday, the Salem News reported. "When choosing between imperfect choices in the summer of no good choices, I understand the risks of remaining home are so high," committee member Amanda Campbell said. "But I'm worried the risk of an in-person opening is even higher, and I don't want to take those risks."

School districts have until Aug. 10 to finalize reopening decisions and forward them to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
