SALEM, MA — Salem residents can now get around town for $2 or less as part of a new ride-sharing service called the Salem Skipper.

The service, which includes plexiglass partitions to allow for social distancing, will work like a minibus where riders can "hail" the Skipper through a phone app or through a phone call. Advanced algorithms will allow for multiple riders to share the same vehicle through directing passengers to nearby "virtual" bus stops within a short walking distance.

The city hopes the ride-sharing option will help Salem's efforts to become a "car-light community."

"This is as an opportunity for Salem residents, commuters, and visitors to get around Salem easily and affordably," said Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll, "The Salem Skipper will get you from your home to a doctor's appointment, from the office to the MBTA Commuter Rail station, from campus to downtown, or anywhere you need to go in Salem without having to worry about parking."

Masks are required for riders and drivers at all times and no more than three riders will be allowed at any one time amid the coronavirus health crisis.

New riders will get their first 10 trips for free until Feb. 16 with rides after that $2 for the general public and $1 for senior citizens and people with disabilities. The service will be available 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays.

The four Salem Skipper vehicles will be two Chrysler Pacificas and two accessible Dodge Caravans.

The Salem Skipper app is available on iPhone and Android devices, and the service can be reached at 844-983-1842. Riders will enter a desired pickup and drop-off address to book a ride and will receive vehicle information and an estimated pickup time and location.

The Salem Skipper is supported by a Workforce Transit Grant from Massachusetts Department of Transportation. The Salem Skipper is also made possible through the efforts of the Salem for All Ages initiative.
