Salem's Northeast Animal Shelter Brings In 42 More Texas Dogs
After adopting nearly 100 dogs and cats following the Texas winter storm last month, Amos and Andy are among the new Lone Star transplants.
SALEM, MA —After adopting out nearly 100 dogs and cats brought from Texas following last month's winter storm, the Northeast Animal Shelter of Salem welcomed 42 more dogs from the Lone Star state this week.
This week's dogs — including Amos and Andy (shown above) — arrived from St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center and Chances Dog Rescue and Relocation in the Houston area as part of a 2,700-mile round trip transport.
The adoption efforts are part of a recent partnership with the Northeast Animal Shelter and the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals-Angell Memorial.

"In the wake of a disaster, it's incredibly important to offer sustained support to the many shelters and communities who are experiencing the ripple effects—which we expect to resume for some time. NEAS and the MSPCA are very fortunate to have transport vehicles and adoption center capacity, as well as adopters eager to give pets homes," Mike Keiley, interim Northeast Animal Shelter executive director, said. "We will continue to be a resource for animal welfare organizations, including those in Texas that aim to create more space in shelters to help as many animals, and people, as possible."
Last month, the Northeast Animal Shelter sent four vans on a 4,000-mile round trip to bring back 91 dogs and cats from Texas — nearly all of which have since been adopted.

The family of Amos and Andy gave the dogs up for adoption when forced to move into a hotel indefinitely because of storm damage. Shelters in Texas were already overflowing with animals during the pandemic — with the storm only exacerbating the problem.
Shelters in Texas have been trying to make room for animals that need temporary homes through moving ones looking for their forever home to areas of the country — like New England — that have a shortage of adoptable pets.
