Here's How Seekonk, Swansea Students Did On The MCAS Test

Seekonk students exceeded state average, while Swansea students did below average except in science.

BOSTON— Massachusetts has released results of the latest MCAS test, which is used by the state as a guide to measure students' academic performance. In Seekonk, students generally exceeded the state average, while Swansea students did slightly below the state average, except in science.

In the Seekonk School District, students' overall scores exceeded the state average in all subjects. The only area where they did not do better than average was sixth-grade math, in which 49 percent of Seekonk students met or exceeded expectations, lower than the state average of 52 percent.

When it comes to overall scores for third- through eighth-grade students, though, 59 percent of Seekonk students at least met expectations in math on the MCAS test, which is still higher than the state average for those grades, 49 percent. In 10th-grade math, 67 percent of Seekonk students met or exceeded expectations, again higher than the state average of 59 percent.

In English and in science, all grade levels in Seekonk performed better than the state average on the test, according to data released Tuesday. Sixty-two percent of Seekonk's third- through eighth-graders at least met expectations in English, compared to the state average of 52 percent. And in 10th-grade English, 79 percent of Seekonk students at least met expectations, again higher than the 61-percent state average.

In science, only students in grades five, eight and 10 are tested via MCAS. In Seekonk, 58 percent of fifth- and eighth-graders met or exceeded expectations, while the state average was 48 percent. In 10th grade, 84 percent of Seekonk students showed proficiency, compared to the state average of 74 percent.

In Swansea, overall scores were slightly below the state average, except in science. In 10th grade, 91 percent of Swansea 10th-graders showed science proficiency, compared to the 74-percent state average. And for fifth and eighth grade, 57 percent of Swansea students met or exceeded expectations in science, compared to the 48-percent state average.

Swansea students did slightly more poorly than the state average in math and English, though. In math, 47 percent of Swansea's third- to eighth-graders at least met expectations, which is 2 percent below the state average. For 10th-grade math, 57 percent of Swansea students met or exceeded expectations, which is again 2 percent lower than the state average.

In English, 51 percent of Swansea's third- to eight-grade students at least met expectations, which is 1 percent below the state average. And 56 percent of its 10th-graders met or exceeded expectations in English, which is 5 percent below the state average.
