Martin Elementary In Seekonk Hosts Student Inclusivity Events
The events are being funded by a grant from the Special Olympics of Massachusetts.
SEEKONK, MA — Seekonk School District announced Monday that students and staff Martin Elementary School have been participating in events that promote inclusivity.
The school has been participating in activities with the theme "Choose to Include" for the past few weeks, including some that coincided with World Down Syndrome Day, and future events will coincide with Autism Awareness Day.
The events are bring funded through the Special Olympics of Massachusetts (SOMA) for Martin Elementary School becoming a Unified Champion School.

“We’re grateful to have been awarded the SOMA grant and we want to acknowledge STARS teacher Becki Murray for hosting events that promote and celebrate inclusion,” said Principal Bart Lush in a statement.
The events have included an "Exploring Around the World" Unified Event for fifth graders and students in the special education STARS program and a "Rock Your Socks Day" in recognition of World Down Syndrome Day. In April, students will wear blue to show support for Autism Awareness Day and will participate in an inclusion spirit week starting April 5.

“It’s great to see the faculty, staff and students at Martin Elementary School participate in this year’s Special Olympics of Massachusetts’ Unified Events,” said Superintendent Rich Drolet in a statement. “Thanks to the grant given to Unified Champion Schools, Martin Elementary had the opportunity to participate in its first year of Unified Events. These events did a great job bringing students together and in promoting inclusion.”
