Michael Doherty Funeral Services Announced

Michael Doherty, a Duke University student from Franklin, was found dead over the weekend after going missing for a week.

FRANKLIN, MA — Funeral services will be held this week for Michael Doherty, the 20-year-old Duke University student from Franklin found dead over the weekend. Doherty's body was found in a wooded area in Franklin Saturday, a week after he went missing from a party with friends. Foul play is not suspected, police said.

Calling hours for Doherty will be held Wednesday at Ginley Funeral Home in Franklin. His funeral is Thursday at St. Mary Church in Franklin.

Doherty was a rising junior at Duke studying mechanical engineering.

Michael Doherty's Obituary

Michael Joseph Doherty, 20, of Franklin, has sadly passed away after missing for almost a week. He was found on Saturday, May 20, 2017. Born in Newton on October 23, 1996, he was the beloved son of Daniel F. Doherty, III and Nancy E. (Foley) Doherty and the loving brother of Daniel W. and Kevin J. Doherty, all of Franklin.
He is also survived by his grandmothers, Mary J. Foley of Franklin and Barbara H. Doherty of Cotuit and many aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends. He was the grandson of the late Daniel F. Doherty Jr. and Walter J. Foley.
Michael was a lifelong resident of Franklin and had participated in Franklin youth sports his entire life. He graduated from Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood where he played soccer, baseball and excelled in the high jump for the track team, competing at the States his senior year.
Michael recently completed his sophomore year at Duke University where he was studying mechanical engineering and was a member of the ATO Fraternity. He played hockey for the Duke Club team and was expected to be captain next year.
Michael enjoyed golfing, skiing, playing wiffle ball with friends and taking family vacations to the Cape and Vermont. He also worked part-time at Roche Brothers in Millis.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Mass on Thursday, May 25 at St. Mary Church in Franklin at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at the parish cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, May 24 from 3 - 8 p.m. in the Ginley Funeral Home of Franklin, 131 Main Street (www.ginleyfuneralhomes.com).
In lieu of flowers, Michael’s family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Michael J. Doherty Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Xaverian Brothers High School, 800 Clapboardtree St., Westwood, MA 02090.
