Obituary: Lionel M. Moniz Jr.
Lionel M. Moniz was the former assistant superintendent of the Swansea Water Department.

Lionel M. Moniz Jr., 75, of Swansea died on Thursday, June 13, 2013, at Charlton Hospital in Fall River. He was the husband of 55 years to Maureen J. (Dunlea) Moniz.
Lionel was born in Fall River the son of the late Lionel M. Moniz Sr. and Rose (Raposa) Moniz. He graduated from Joseph Case High School class of 1956. Mr. Moniz served his country during the Vietnam War with the United Sates Air Force.

After the war he earned an Asssociate’s degree from Bristol Community College in liberal arts. He then graduated from the former Southeastern Massachusetts University in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in education. He continued graduate work in education at SMU and also in public administration at the University of Rhode Island.
Mr. Moniz worked for the Town of Swansea for two years as the assistant superintendent of the water department and then as the superintendent for the North Tiverton water department for 28-years before retiring in 2000.

He was a communicant of Saint Francis of Assisi Church in Swansea. He was one of the founding members of the Rhode Island Water Works Association and the first education chairman of the R.W.W.A. He was also a member of the American Water Works Association.
Survivors besides his wife a daughter: Lisa Lees and her husband Scott of Swansea; two sons: Kerry P. Moniz and his wife Martha of Swansea; L. Scott Moniz and his wife Stacey of Swansea; five grandchildren: Heidi, Torie, Cole, Keegan, and Jamison: a great granddaughter: Haley, along with several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Maureen Chasse.
Arrangements were handled by Hathaway Community Home for Funerals. A mass of Christian Burial was held at Saint Francis of Assisi Church, 530 Gardeners Neck Road, Swansea.
