Obituary: Rene Bernard, Veteran of United States Airforce

Rene G. Bernard, 82, of Swansea, passed away suddenly Sept. 24, 2013 in Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River.

He was the husband of Alice G. (Duguay) Bernard to whom he had been married for 60 years.

Born in Worcester, son of the late Edward and Gertrude (Melanson) Bernard, he lived in Worcester for many years before moving to Swansea in 1989. He was a graduate of Worcester Commerce High School and attended Worcester Poly Technical Institute.

A Veteran of the United States Airforce, he served during the Korean Conflict as a Technical Sergeant and was stationed in Wyoming, Virginia and Morocco.

Mr. Bernard worked as an engineer at Deknatel in Fall River and prior to that at Beaver Surgical in Waltham and Morgan Construction Company in Worcester. 

A member of the Knights of Columbus, he was a Fourth Degree brother and a former Grand Knight. He was a member, chapter president and state manager of the Holiday Rambler Recreational Vehicle Club. An avid woodworker, he enjoyed traveling east of the Mississippi in his motor coach.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Bernard is survived by his sons Peter Bernard of Swansea and Mark Bernard and his wife Robin of Barre; his brother Leo Bernard of Worcester; his grandchildren twin boys Christopher and Corey Bernard and Rebecca Bernard; his great-grandson; and his several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings Joyce Quillia and Ronald Bernard.

His Funeral will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013 10 a.m. at Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Birchcrest, 189 Gardner's Neck Road, Swansea, followed by a Funeral Mass 11 a.m. in St. Dominic's Church 1277 G.A.R. Highway, Swansea. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Burial will be private.
