Seekonk Town Meeting Approves More Funds for Senior Center
New Senior Center more costly than expected.

Residents at the Seekonk Town Meeting approved additional funds on Monday to pay for extra costs for the new Senior Center construction.
The measure passed 88 votes to 32. Town clerk Jan Parker said though the turnout was about 150, not everyone at the meeting wanted their voices heard on this topic.
“There were originally about 150 people, but not everybody votes,” she said. “In town meetings we get anywhere from 100 to 200 people.”

The additional costs, $386,600, added to the $2.5 million project was approved for at last year’s town meeting. Originally the project called for a loan and a tax increase in April 2012.
Parker said the Board of Selectmen now has to approve a special ballot for the additional costs and acquisition of funds.

“The election will probably be sometime in July,” she said.
Parker said the additional costs came from unforeseen problems in the design process. She said since the building is modular, the project would still move forward if the additional funds are not approved in July.
