Swansea Mall Closes
The Swansea Mall was in business for 45 years, and at its height, had close to 90 stores and businesses.
SWANSEA, MA — After 45 years in business, the Swansea Mall on Sunday closed its doors for good. The 84-acre site was once home to nearly 90 stores and businesses. But now, any remaining stores have only a few weeks to remove their merchandise, as the mall is going up for bid in two weeks.
Abdi Mahamedi, the CEO of Carlyle Development Group, the company which owns the mall, told WPRI 12 News the company tried to keep the mall open, but it got too difficult. Before it closed, the mall had only 14 businesses left, compared to the close to 90 it once had.
Mahamedi said the mall needed to be redeveloped as a mixed use project with apartments, senior housing, and offices in order to survive, but the company did not have the capacity to pull that off.
