Eagles Soar to Win Over Quincy

Sharon boys varsity basketball team beat Quincy Saturday, 78-61, in front of a raucous home crowd and will move on to the Div. 2 South Sectional semi-final.

The Eagles relied on strong defense, forcing turnovers and pestering Quincy's shooters throughout the game.

They also relied on junior guard Brian Mukasa who led the team with 23 points and was a tough match-up for Quincy defenders.

Both teams battled hard in the first half with Quincy leading at halftime, 40-33, after holding the Eagles to only 8 points in the second quarter.

At the half, Sharon head coach Bruce Jackman made defensive adjustments that led to the Eagles allowing only 21 points the rest of the game, including holding Quincy to 8 points in the fourth quarter.

"We changed our whole defensive alignment in the second half. We put three people on the baseline so that they couldn't get the shot from the corner. And we also put two people down the middle so that their point guard could not penetrate," Jackman said.

With Sharon leading, 56-53, heading into the fourth quarter the Eagles exploded offensively scoring 22 points to close out the game. Junior James Fritzon had 10 points in the fourth quarter.

Sharon saw strong contributions from Fritzon, who had 20 points, and senior captain Kevin Bartas who chipped in with 18 points.

The Blue Devils were led by senior captain Jaquan Harris who tallied 16 points. Colin Evans and Tino Gonsalves each added 13 points, respectively.

The Eagles will move on to the semi-final round of the Div. 2 South Sectional Tuesday, March 5 against top seeded Scituate. The game will be in Taunton at 7 p.m.
