Sharon High Principal Resigns After Extended Leave Of Absence

Dr. Jose Libano had been on voluntary, paid leave for a year pending two investigations concerning a former teacher.

SHARON, MA — Sharon High School Principal Dr. Jose Libano has resigned following a year-long leave of absence. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Victoria Greer and Libano announced the decision in a joint statement after Libano had been on paid, voluntary leave for a year pending the outcome of two investigations involving a former teacher.

Greer said in the statement that the "paid leave was in no way disciplinary" and that Libano was fully cooperative. She stressed the resignation is "not the result of any disciplinary action of any kind, nor does it indicate any wrongdoing whatsoever on his part." She said that the attorney representing the outside investigation notified the school district that there was "no evidence to support the notion that Dr. Libano or other administrators were dismissive of any claims brought to their attention regarding the former teacher."

Greer and Libano said the decision was made to pursue other professional opportunities.

"I let Dr. Greer know today that, because I've been on leave for nearly a year, I've decided it would be difficult to transition back to the helm of Sharon High School and it's best for everyone to get a fresh start," Libano said.

Libano was principal at Sharon High for more than 13 years.

“We're grateful for Dr. Libano's years of service to the school and to this community, and we wish him great success in the next chapter of his career,” said Dr. Greer. “We look forward to building on Dr. Libano's solid foundation to bring Sharon High School to even greater heights moving forward."

Ralph Olsen, who has served as acting principal during the school year, will remain in position through the end of June. Greer said she will announce details of the search process and timeline in the coming weeks. She said the hope is to have a permanent successor in place by July 1.

Greer credited Libano's leadership for Sharon's recognition as a Blue Ribbon School, successful completion of two NEASC accreditation reviews, and adoption of a new schedule to accommodate a later start time. The district also began efforts to secure funding for a new Sharon High School, which resulted in voter approval last fall of a referendum for construction of a new school facility.

"I'm proud of all that we have accomplished together at Sharon High School," said Libano. "I've been incredibly fortunate to work in such a wonderful school system with dedicated staff, talented students, engaged families, and supportive community members, all of whom share a commitment to educational excellence."
