Sharon Police Chief Issues Letter To Community After Murder

Sharon Police Chief John Ford addressed the Monday morning discovery of a Brockton man found shot in a burning car on Edge Hill Road.

SHARON, MA — Sharon Police Chief John Ford issues a letter to the community on Wednesday regarding the death of a Brockton man found shot in a burning car early Monday morning. The body of Roberto Correra, 44, was identified as the man found dead in a burning car off Edge Hill Road early Monday morning with multiple gunshot wounds.

Chief Ford said the incident shows how much officers put on the line during each shift, the dangers they face from threats both inside and outside of the community, and the pledge they take to face those dangers for the benefit of Sharon residents.

"The recent serious event that took place on Edge Hill Road has reminded me of the dangers that are very inherent to our officers.

"Countless times over the years I have heard people tell me how fortunate I am to be a police officer in Sharon because of our town's enviably, low crime rate. I do feel fortunate, for many reasons, to be a police officer in this community. Sharon, in comparisons to many other larger communities as well as like communities is, statistically, very safe.

"However, evil does not stop at our border, and I would venture to state that it travels readily through our streets each and every day. Whereby, such activity can be of little notice to the average citizen, our police officers whom engage such criminals on 'routine' car stops, cannot afford to be so cavalier. The level of safety that our residents enjoy is not the same level of safety that our officers endure each and every day.

"If, by chance, an officer had come upon the recent crime scene at Edge Hill Road and encountered the suspect in the act, there is no doubt in my mind that the individual or individuals that had taken a life would have had no compunction to resist from killing an officer. This type of disregard for life is further exacerbated by the national assault on law enforcement.

"I worry and pray for our brave men and women. They have taken a vow to put their lives on the line for the residents of this community. As I was taught by my faith, 'There is no greater love than that shown by laying down one’s life for another.' A truly sobering vow — but it also makes this profession among the greatest in the world. It also makes us cherish the badge and to appreciate all those whom have worn it over the past century. Please keep our officers in your thoughts and prayers."
