Sharon Police Make Statement On Stopping For School Buses

Sharon police tailed buses Wednesday to reinforce the state law requiring drivers to stop for buses loading and unloading students.

SHARON, MA — Sharon police were out in force Wednesday morning in a public statement reinforcing the need to stop for school buses stopped to load and unload students. Police said cruisers followed several buses as part of the department's efforts to make sure drivers in town adhere to the state law.

"School Buses throughout Sharon are being watched by police," Sharon police posted on social media. "The safety of our children boarding school buses should concern all of us."

Police remind the drivers that they face a $200 fine for violating the law and asked anyone spotting a violator to call Sharon police at 781-784-1587.

During a six-month period from August 2018 to March 2019, 12 children were killed and another 47 were injured while getting on and off school buses. Bus stop-arms were extended at the time, which means motorists were required to come to a full stop.
