Sharon Recreation Cancels Summer Programs Due To Coronavirus
Sharon Recreation said programs, such as sailing and team sports, cannot be held under state's social distancing guidelines.
SHARON, MA — While many communities scramble to find ways of somehow running traditional summer programs under the strict guidelines of the state's coronavirus health emergency directives, the Sharon Recreation Department has determined that cannot do so in a productive manor.
The town has canceled its programs and will be providing refunds within the next week.
"After much discussion with our Recreation Advisory Committee the reality set in that we cannot operate our scheduled summer programs with the current social distancing parameters in place," Sharon Recreation officials said. "We could not host a sailing program with one participant per boat and one staff per rescue boat. How can you host a sports program without the use of shared
equipment and the inability to celebrate with high fives in our Massapoag Sports Program?

"We are confident that this is the best decision for the health and well-being of both our program participants and our staff.
Sharon had previously announced that the town's Independence Day fireworks and annual road race have also been canceled.

Sharon Recreation said resources will be reallocated to supporting town beaches, which are open.
"Be assured, when we get the greenlight to return and the pandemic is in our rear view, our goal is to figure out how we can safely return to do what we love — provide enrichment through educational and recreational activities for people of all ages," Sharon Recreation said.
