Sharon Students Exceed State Average On MCAS In All Areas

In all grades and subjects, Sharon students outdid the state averages on the MCAS test this year.

SHARON, MA — Massachusetts has released results of the latest MCAS test, which is used by the state as a guide to measure students' academic performance. In all subject areas and grade levels, Sharon School District students surpassed the state averages on the test.

In 10th-grade math, 86 percent of Sharon's students met or exceeded expectation on the test, which is considerably higher than the state average of 59 percent. In English, too, they exceeded the state average — 85 percent at least met expectations, compared to the state average of 61 percent. And in science, 90 percent of Sharon's 10th-graders showed proficiency, while the state average was 74 percent.

The data, released Tuesday, also shows Sharon's younger students performing better on the MCAS test than the state average. Seventy-five percent of Sharon's third- through eighth-grade students met or exceeded expectations in math, while the state average was 49 percent. In English, 71 percent of Sharon's students in those grades at least met expectations, compared to the state average of 52 percent. And in science, 72 percent of Sharon's students in grades five and eight at least met expectations on the test, again higher than the 48-percent state average.
