With the school year coming to a close next month, book stores and libraries will be stocking their shelves with the latest summer reading books.
For Sharon Public Schools, students in Grades 6-12 are assigned carefully chosen books to read over the summer.
The book titles and the number of books may vary depending on what level of English your student is in.

Sharon English Language Arts Curriculum Coordinator David Heller said he hopes the books chosen this year are enjoyable for the students.
“It’s usually each grade team that tries to figure out a book that will improve cultural literacy but also is maybe more of a pleasurable read for the summer,” Heller said. “That’s basically the main way and then we usually use books that sync with what a lot of the ELA teachers are going to cover the first month of school.”

Asked which books he was particularly excited for the students to be reading Heller said, “Divergent was one they added last year for the ninth grade class and kids talk about that one all year. They really like it. It’s a little bit more cerebral than the Hunger Games but it still kind of in that wheelhouse in that dystopic literature and all that kind of stuff.”
“Seventh grade also, 'Life As We Knew It,' has a similar mold. Seventh-grade kids really seem to like that one,” he said. “'Into The Wild', that’s always popular.”
For those students who may be apprehensive about reading their books over the summer Heller gave this advice: “Enjoy them on the beach. By and large they’re pretty pleasurable books so I would say maybe read them a little bit later in the summer so that it’s fresher in their heads when they hit school.”
