Duxbury Boys' Tennis Team Ends Sharon's Season in Division 2 South Semifinals

Sharon loses to Duxbury, 4-1, in Division 2 South semifinals.

The Sharon High boys' tennis team's season ended with a 4-1 loss to a very strong Duxbury in the Division 2 South semifinals Thursday afternoon at home.

Sharon (19-2 overall) showed some promise in the first doubles match with Josh Dobbin and Richard Shen beating Duxbury's Will Kingsburg and Will Trebel 6-3, 6-2.

The Eagles' Max Grooks and Gran Barron lost 6-3 and 6-1 to Duxbury's Kevin Coakley and Dan McHugh.

The defining battle for both teams boiled down to the match between Sharon captain Jake Steinberg and Duxbury's Mike Melampy. Both opponents played for well over an hour and a half straight. Melampy won out though, beating Steinberg in both sets.

New head coach Joan Cutter said the team played well, continuing Sharon's tennis tradition.

"I don't know if it's in the water, but there's something about Sharon that breeds tennis," she said. "Sharon's won the Hock for the past 34 years straight."

Cutter said six of her team is graduating this year, but she feels the returning players will rise above.

"We'll get all the way to the finals next year," she said.

Cutter said this season was great season.

"We only lost one match to Newton North, and that was out of league," she said. "It's just a huge record."
