Davis Square Properties Bought For Nearly $10M

The deal could pave the way for student housing in the popular Somerville neighborhood.

SOMERVILLE, MA — An international student housing developer has swept up three properties in Davis Square. British firm Scape acquired the properties – which include the Burren Pub, McKinnon’s Meat Market and When Pigs Fly Bread – for $9.755 million, according to Banker & Tradesman.

Scape signed a 99-year ground lease on the parcels, which are owned by Newton-based developer Myer Dana and Sons, according to Middlesex County records cited by the publication. The company operates independent dormitories in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia and recently opened a U.S. headquarters in Boston last year.

It's currently seeking approval of a 533-bed, 15-story building in Fenway that has received pushback from area residents. In a statement to Curbed, Scape CEO Andrew Flynn said the firm is "fully committed to a transparent process that engages all stakeholders" as it looks ahead at potential projects in Somerville.
