Local students can earn free kayaking tickets through reading...

For every book a student reads, they will receive a free hour of kayaking redeemable this summer!

Wakefield Community Boating is making a splash this summer by offering free kayaking to any student who reads. In partnership with the Lucius Beebe Memorial Library and the National Grid Foundation, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Stoneham & Wakefield will be offering an hour of free kayaking at sign up for summer reading, and for every book read.

Students looking to earn a free kayaking ticket can visit the Beebe Memorial Library to get a ticket and more information.

"We here at Beebe are delighted to offer these kayaking passes in celebration of B&GC's inaugural boating year and the fun of reading," stated Library Director Catherine McDonald.

"Together, our Clubs, the Beebe Library, and the National Grid Foundation can confront a variety of issues. By kayaking, learning about the environment, and giving our kids outdoor activities; we can reverse learning loss, keep children active, and arguably most important, ensure the most vulnerable children have a safe and nurturing Summer," commented Adam Rodgers, Boys & Girls Clubs Executive Director Adam Rodgers.

Starting on June 26th the community will be able to enjoy kayaking from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday through Sunday on Lake Quannapowitt. Reservations are not required but you are able to make them on WakefieldBoating.com.

The National Grid Foundation's No Screen Summer! Program at the Boys and Girls Clubs teaches youth about our beautiful world and community through enriching environmental education. This program provides the opportunity for reflection on environmental footprints, educational hikes, environmental conservation projects, learning about agriculture, and engaging activities such as kayaking.

If you are interested in dropping in, you can walk up to the kayak shack located on the lower common of Lake Quannapowitt. Select local businesses such as Holiday Travel, Smith Drug Store, and The Savings Bank will also be selling kayak tickets. Tickets purchased at these locations will be at the lower Wakefield Residential Price of $9, even if not a Wakefield resident. Residents can also receive $5 off coupons at the Beebe Library.

Wakefield Boating kicks off on Saturday, June 26 at 9:00 am with a ribbon cutting at the lower common of Lake Quannapowitt.
