Rash of Car Breaks Prompts Police Warning

Stoneham Police are urging residents to protect their valuables as theft and break-ins rise.

After a rash of car break-ins, the Stoneham Police Department is warning residents to lock their cars to prevent theft this holiday season.

Officers have investigated 13 car breaks in the past week. Generally, loose change and charger cords were stolen, but an iPad and a dashboard camera are also missing. In all cases, the cars were left unlocked, police said.

Theft tends to increase during the holiday season thieves attempt to cash in on others’ purchases. Police are increasing their presence in the community, Chief James McIntyre said in a press release, but asked that residents do their part to help prevent the crimes.

“Unfortunately, we see an increase in this type of theft during the holidays,” Chief McIntyre said. “In order to ensure the holiday is enjoyable, we strongly urge residents to take the simple step of locking their vehicles and securing belongings to prevent themselves from becoming a target of one of these crimes.”

In addition to locking their cars, police advise residents to put any valuables in the trunk, where they are locked and out of sight.
