Man Accused Of Attacking State Trooper Caught In Stoughton: MSP

STOUGHTON, MA — A Boston man was arrested in Stoughton after Massachusetts State Police said he assaulted a state trooper after being pulled over on Route 24 in Randolph.

According to State Police, Devin Fuller, 29, was pulled over for speeding around 2:30 a.m., Saturday. Police said Fuller ignored officers' commands to get out of the car, so police tried to grab his arm and escort him out.

Fuller then punched the state trooper in the face and reached for the center console, police said. Fearing Fuller could be grabbing a weapon, the officer pulled Fuller from the car, and the fight continued in the breakdown lane. State Police said Fuller repeatedly struck the trooper, tackled him to the ground, drove his face into the pavement and choked him.

As the struggle continued, the trooper was able to get back to his feet, but then Fuller grabbed him with both arms and drove him 15-20 feet across two travel lanes in front of oncoming traffic, police said. A driver had to swerve out of the way to avoid hitting the trooper.

The trooper and Fuller again fell to the ground and continued fighting, and police said Fuller pulled at the trooper’s belt and reached for his gun. The trooper put both hands on his gun to prevent the suspect from gaining control of it.

The violent struggle ended when an off-duty trooper driving in his personal vehicle on Route 24 saw what was happening and pulled over to help the officer. At that point, Fuller got back into his car, sped in reverse in the wrong direction about 100 yards, then put the car back into forward gear, pulled across two travel lanes with no regard for oncoming traffic, and sped down Route 24 southbound at an estimated speed of 140 mph, weaving across all lanes, police said.

State Police began pursuing Fuller down Route 24 until he exited onto Route 139 in Stoughton. State Police said they saw Fuller drive into an industrial park and called a K-9 unit, the off-duty trooper and Stoughton police to assist.

Fuller's car was found abandoned in the rear of the industrial park. The State Police K9 unit and the trooper who had been assaulted searched through the woods for Fuller. While they were tracking Fuller, Stoughton officers found him behind the Hampton Inn & Suites on Page Street.

Police searched Fuller's car and said they found a bottle of hydrocodone pills, a small amount of marijuana and three THC edible packets. State Police said they also found plastic bags often used to sell drugs.

Following the arrest, the trooper who was assaulted was taken to Milton Hospital and was treated for cuts and contusions to his head, upper body and lower body.

Fuller was charged with assault with intent to murder, assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, failure to stop for police, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, possession of Class D and C drugs with intent to distribute, operating after license suspension, speeding and disturbing the peace.

Fuller was ordered held on $50,000 bail and was scheduled to be arraigned in Stoughton District Court Monday.
