The free class will be taught by 22-year veteran and sergeant of the Boston Police Department, Gary Eblan.

Self-defense expert and 22-year veteran and sergeant of the Boston Police Department Gary Eblan will be teaching a free women's self-defense class this Saturday.

In its third year, the class at MAXX Training Center on Rose Street in Stoughton is open to women of all ages and will teach self-defense techniques and strategies.

“The class is geared towards giving women as much knowledge as possible to make their lives that much safer from predatory people,” said MAXX owner Mike Varner.

Varner said the class is about 75-percent lecture and 25-percent hands-on training. He is expecting about 40-50 women to attend.

“He’s going to be teaching them body language, things to look for…being aware of your surroundings, having an escape route, always having a backup plan, how do you carry yourself walking through public, being in a dark place, where your keys should be, what’s a potential weapon?," Varner said of Eblan's class.

The class will be from 12-2 p.m. Saturday, May 11. MAXX is at 49 Rose St. across from the Police Station.

Varner said he hosts the class in the hopes of helping women stay safe in a dangerous world.

“When you do something repetitively, when you do it enough times it becomes a reaction,” he said. “We try to get as much repetitive knowledge to these women so that if a situation were to arise hopefully something that we show them or tell them clicks instantly.”
