STOUGHTON, MA — New train schedules along the MBTA's Providence-Stoughton line went into effect Monday, offering more midday trips and trains arriving at more regular intervals.

Commuters departing from main stations like Providence and Stoughton can expect trains at least every hour between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. Trains after 9 p.m. will also still be available — the MBTA had wanted to cut late-night trains to save money.

But the biggest change along the Providence-Stoughton line will be the addition of trains during the midday hours. For example, commuters in Stoughton will see inbound trains every hour between the morning and evening rush. Outbound trains will also run hourly during midday hours.

Farther south, commuters in Wickford Junction and TF Green also will no longer need a connection bus for continued service.

Commuter rail trips are still way down compared to before the pandemic. The latest data from MassDOT showed about 368,000 daily commuter rail trips in November across the entire system. In February 2020, there were about 1.2 million daily trips.
