RecycleWorks Withdraws Application For Stoughton Site

The proposal faced heavy opposition from residents and town officials.

STOUGHTON, MA — A proposal to bring a recycling center to a building on Cushing Street across from O'Donnell Middle School is no more.

Barry Crimmins, an attorney for RecycleWorks, appeared in front of the zoning board of appeals Thursday night to withdraw their application. Mark Snyder of Stoughton News was the first to report of the applicant's intent to request a withdrawal.

Representatives from the company were expected present the proposal to the board Thursday night, but have faced large opposition following meetings with the selectmen and school committee.

The company was hoping to move their recycling operation for beverage packages that are no longer suitable to be sold, such as expired drinks or spoiled milk from Weymouth to Stoughton. Moe Banville, the COO of RecycleWorks, said at past meetings that the entire operation would have been inside with no audible noise from outside the building. Traffic concerns would have been addressed by telling truck drivers to enter from Simpson Street rather than Cushing Street. Up to 25 trucks a day would have visited the facility.

Banville said he was open to limiting truck access from Cushing Street, but the size and number of trucks expected to travel to the building gave town officials and residents pause.

Because a recycling plan is not a by-right use for the building located in an area zoned for industrial use, approval was needed from the ZBA.
