Stoughton Car Crashes On The Decline

The number of motor vehicle crashes in Stoughton has declined every year since 2016, according to MassDOT data.

STOUGHTON, MA — There were 662 motor vehicle crashes in Stoughton last year, the lowest total since 2013, according to data from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. And the number of car crashes in Stoughton has declined every year since 2016, when Stoughton had 767 crashes. The number of crashes resulting in injuries has also declined in each of the past two years.

The decline in the number of crashes in Stoughton buck state trends. Across Massachusetts, the total number of crashes dropped slightly in 2019 and 2018 after increasing in each of the eight previous years.

On average, Stoughton has 1.6 fatal car crashes each year, according to the MassDOT number, since 2007, the furthest year back for which data is available. That number is also on the decline with just one fatal crash in the last four years.

Most crashes, fatal or otherwise, occur at the intersection of Pleasant and Lincoln streets, followed by Park Street and the intersection of Pearl and Central streets.

Of the 662 crashes in Stoughton in 2019, 144 were classified as "older-driver related" and 101 were classified as "young-driver related." There were 12 crashes involving motorcycles, 11 involving pedestrians and one involving a bicycle.
