Stoughton Nurse Killed In Hit-And-Run Crash While Giving Aid

An off-duty nurse​, Jennifer Toscano, 34, of Stoughton stopped to help a driver in a roll-over crash, but was hit by a car while giving aid.

STOUGHTON, MA — An off-duty nurse from Stoughton was killed during a hit-and-run crash while trying to help a driver involved in a roll-over crash, Rhode Island State Police said.

The initial crash happened just around 1:45 a.m., Sunday, on Interstate 95 North near exit 30 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

An off-duty nurse, Jennifer Toscano, 34, of Stoughton stopped to help the driver and was hit by a red car that drove off, police said. Toscano was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police later found the vehicle. The driver, Luis Baez, 22, of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, was charged with

  • Driving under the influence of liquor and or drugs, resulting in death
  • Driving so as to endanger, resulting in death
  • Leaving the scene of an accident, resulting in death
  • Operating on a suspended license, first offense

Baez was held over the weekend and arraigned in Providence District Court on Monday.

An investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to call State Police at 401-444-1100.
