The Massachusetts Department of Health recommends that every person older than 6 months in age get a flu shot each year. The vaccine is also required for all Massachusetts school students enrolled in child care, pre-school, K-12 education and post-secondary institutions.

The flu shot is also recommended for people in high risk groups: people age 50 and older, pregnant and postpartum women, people with illnesses that weaken the immune system, people with breathing or swallowing difficult, residents of long-term care facilities, and those with a high likelihood of giving the flu to an at-risk person.
