West School Renamed Richard Wilkins Elementary School

The school now bears the name of the man who was the school's principal for over 37 years.

STOUGHTON, MA — The new sign is out in front of what is now the former West Elementary School.

In a rare move for any school district, the school was formally renamed the Richard L. Wilkins Elementary School during a ceremony held Tuesday night. Despite the poor weather, the new sign with the school's changed name was unveiled.

Prior to the unveiling, school officials talked highly of Wilkins, who was the principal of the school named after him from 1968 to 1995. He served the school district for nearly four decades.

"Professionalism, character, dedication, and sincerity are all words associated with Mr. Wilkins' memory. It is an honor to have this school named after him and it will our challenge each and every day to live up to the fantastic example he established," Principal Lisa Whelan said.

The renaming follows an endorsement from the school committee in July and is another honor for Wilkins. The school's driveway is named "Richard Wilkins Way," there's a plaque in the library dedicated to him, and a scholarship that goes to a graduating senior that went to the school.
