Sudbury Police Report Rise In Motor Vehicle Thefts

In some thefts, police have found air rifles in stolen cars that may be connected to other crimes in the area.

SUDBURY, MA — Sudbury police are warning resident about a marked rise in vehicle-related crimes.

So far this year, Sudbury police have fielded 10 reports of stolen cars. There were just four over the same period last year, the department said in a Facebook post Tuesday. Police have also responded to 10 car prowl incidents.

More alarming: police have recovered three vehicles stolen from Sudbury, and inside found air rifles that may have been used in other crimes. Sudbury police would have recovered a fourth vehicle, but the driver sped away at over 100 mph, according to police.

"Recently, a stolen vehicle (from Sudbury) crashed in a nearby jurisdiction at such a high speed it nearly killed one of its occupants," police said in a Facebook post. "This is a frequent and ongoing problem in our regional area and is being actively investigated."

Police are advising residents to lock car doors, keep valuables out of the car and keep car keys inside your home.
