Sudbury Releases Draft Of New Disaster Plan

Did you know an earthquake fault line runs through Sudbury? The town's new hazard mitigation plan explains local risks in detail.

SUDBURY, MA — If you're not familiar with all the natural hazards around you in Sudbury — like the thrust fault line that runs approximately under the Raymond Reservation — then you're going to want to check out the town's new draft hazard mitigation plan.

The hazard plan isn't meant to scare local residents, but to prepare you for all the possibilities, from hurricanes to, yes, an earthquake.

"The purpose of the Sudbury Hazard Mitigation Plan is to preserve the quality of life, property values, natural and historic resources by identifying all potential natural hazards impacting the community and mitigating their effects to reduce loss of life, as well as, losses of economic, natural, and historic resources," the document says.

This is the town's first significant update to the plan since 2010, and is the first time Sudbury has had its own standalone plan. The document was written by a number of local officials, including Chief Scott Nix and Fire Chief John Whalen.

You can read the entire plan on the town website. The plan is also open for public comment through the end of February. If you want to submit a comment, contact project manager Craig Pereira at Horsley Witten Group by emailing cpereira@horsleywitten.com.
